Summary
Some smart devices require firmware or software updates before they can successfully connect to TUdevices. If a newly registered device cannot connect, temporarily connect it to a personal hotspot, install all available updates, restart the device, and then reconnect it to TUdevices. This resolves the issue in most cases.

Overview
This article explains how to connect a new or recently registered smart device (IoT device) to the TUdevices network.
Some smart devices require firmware or software updates immediately after initial setup. Even when the device has been successfully registered, outdated firmware may prevent it from authenticating or connecting to the TUdevices network.
In these cases, the device may need temporary Internet access through a personal hotspot so it can download and install required updates before joining the campus network.
Recommended Connection Process
Follow the steps below to ensure a successful connection.
Step 1: Register the Device
Register the device through the standard TU device registration process. Article - Network Device Registration
Important: Registration alone does not guarantee connectivity. Some devices must be updated before they can successfully connect to TUdevices.
Step 2: Connect the Device to a Temporary Hotspot
If the device does not connect to TUdevices after registration:
- Enable a temporary hotspot using a mobile phone or other approved hotspot device.
- Connect the smart device to the hotspot.
- Verify that the device has internet access.
Note: The hotspot should only be used temporarily to allow the device to download updates.
Step 3: Update the Device
While the device is connected to the hotspot:
- Check for available firmware, software, or system updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Reboot the device if prompted.
Tip: Some devices require multiple update cycles. Continue checking for updates until no additional updates are available.
Step 4: Connect to the TUdevices Network
After all updates have been installed:
- Disconnect the device from the hotspot.
- Connect the device to the TUdevices network.
- Verify that the device connects successfully and operates normally.
In most cases, the device should now connect without issue.
Troubleshooting
If the device still cannot connect to TUdevices, try the following:
- Ensure all available updates have been completed.
- Restart or power-cycle the device.
- Confirm that TUdevices is the selected wireless network.
- Verify that the device registration information is accurate, including:
- MAC address
- Device type
- Remove and re-add the Wi-Fi connection if the device supports it.
Contact the IT Service Desk
If the device still fails to connect after completing the steps above, contact IT Help Desk or call (918) 631-3500 and provide the following information:
- Device manufacturer and model
- MAC address
- Confirmation that all firmware and software updates have been completed
- A description of any error messages displayed by the device
