Setting up Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

How to setup and connect to VPN across various operating systems (Windows, Mac, Android, etc.)

Certain campus network resources are only accessible when you are connected directly to the University of Tulsa network. If you need to access these resources while off-campus, you must connect to the campus network using the Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN client.

GlobalProtect on Android

Download the GlobalProtect VPN Client

You need to install the Global Protect app on your Android device to connect to the TU VPN server.

Go to the Google Play Store and search for GlobalProtect. Click Install and follow any install prompts.

Connect

Open the GlobalProtect app. The first time you open the app, it will prompt you for a portal address.

Enter tuvpn.utulsa.edu and click Connect.

Traveling Outside the United States: If you plan to travel outside the United States use travelvpn.utulsa.edu

Enter your TUNetID and password when prompted. Press the Sign In button.

You may be prompted for your TUNetID and password a second time.

You should also get MFA prompt to enter a code that you receive by text or email.

When the GlobalProtect app has sucessfully connected it will say Connected, Tap to Disconnect.

You can now access protected university systems.

NOTE: The VPN connection must be turned on from this screen whenever you’re attempting to remotely connect to a TU computer.

Note: Make sure you have enabled Wi-Fi and are connected to the Internet or you may have trouble connecting to GlobalProtect VPN client.

GlobalProtect on iOS

Download the GlobalProtect VPN Client

You need to install the Global Protect app on your iOS device to connect to the TU VPN server.

Go to the App Store and search for GlobalProtect. Click Install and follow any install prompts.

Connect

Open the GlobalProtect app. The first time you open the app, it will prompt you for a portal address.

Enter tuvpn.utulsa.edu and click Connect.

Traveling Outside the United States: If you plan to travel outside the United States use travelvpn.utulsa.edu

Enter your TUNetID and password when prompted. If MFA setup, you will be prompted to enter the one-time code sent to the method of your choice.

When the GlobalProtect app has sucessfully connected it will say Connected, Tap to Disconnect.

You can now access protected university systems.

GlobalProtect on Mac OS

Download the GlobalProtect VPN Client

To download the GlobalProtect client, open your favorite web browser and navigate to tuvpn.utulsa.edu.

You’ll be prompted to enter your TUNetID and press Next. Enter your password and press Sign in.

Click on the Download Mac link. Once the download completes click on the download button and double click on the GlobalProtect package.

Press OK to launch the GlobalProtect client installer.

Install the GlobalProtect VPN Client

Click Continue to proceed.

Select a destination to install the software files. Click Continue.

The next screen will ask if you want to install or remove the GlobalProtect client. Ensure the GlobalProtect option is selected. Click Continue.

You may get a security prompt at this point. If so, enter your computer administrator credentials and click Install Software.

Once the install is completed you’ll get a confirmation screen. Click Close.

You will be prompted to delete the installer package once it has been installed. You’ll need it to uninstall the software later, so you might want to keep it. Click Keep.

Connect

Once the GlobalProtect client is installed it should automatically launch. The launch icon can be found in the top tool bar.

Enter tuvpn.utulsa.edu for the portal address and click Connect.

A new window will pop up, enter your TUNetID and password when prompted. Press the Sign In button.

When the GlobalProtect client has sucessfully connected it will display a colorful globe with a checkmark and say it’s connected.

You can now access protected university systems.

GlobalProtect on Windows

Download the GlobalProtect VPN Client

To download the GlobalProtect client, open your favorite web browser and navigate to https://tuvpn.utulsa.edu.

You’ll be prompted to enter your TUNetID and password.

Click on Windows 64-bit download link. Once it downloads, click the download file under downloads and choose Open.

Install the GlobalProtect VPN Client

The GlobalProtect client installer should launch. Click Next.

The next screen will ask where you want to install the GlobalProtect client. The default location is fine. Click Next.

The next screen is a confirmation that you’re ready to install. Click Next.

You may get a UAC security prompt at this point. If so, enter your administrator credentials if required and click yes.

Once the install is completed you’ll get a confirmation screen. Click Close.

Connect

Once the GlobalProtect client is installed it should automatically launch. Enter tuvpn.utulsa.edu when prompted for the portal address and click Connect.

Enter your TUNetID and click Next. Enter your password when prompted and click the Sign In button.

When the GlobalProtect client has successfully connected it will display a colorful globe with checkmark; says Connected. You can now access protected university systems.

How to Access UTulsa Resources When Traveling (Windows VPN)

This article shows the process of adding a secondary portal to your Windows device so that you can access TU resources while traveling.

1. Open GlobalProtect

Left-click the GlobalProtect icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner of your desktop).

2. Open GlobalProtect Settings

Click the three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner of the GlobalProtect window.

Select Settings from the dropdown menu.

3. Add the TravelVPN Portal

In the Connection tab, click the + button at the top right of the “Manage Portals” section.

Enter travelvpn.utulsa.edu into the pop-up window and click Add.

4. Switch Between Portals

Click the X to exit the settings window. Then, click the arrow at the bottom of the GlobalProtect window to choose a VPN portal.

Note: You must be disconnected from VPN to change portals.

5. Connect

After selecting travelvpn.utulsa.edu, click Connect and authenticate as usual.

Troubleshooting: Outlook & Teams Won’t Connect?

If Teams or Outlook are not functioning after connecting to TravelVPN, try the following steps:

Fully close Teams or Outlook (right-click tray icon & choose Quit).
Connect to travelvpn.utulsa.edu.
Wait 1 full minute to allow background services to adjust.
Re-open Teams or Outlook.

This typically resolves common VPN transition issues.
