macOS and Application Updates Using Jamf

The University of Tulsa uses Jamf to manage macOS operating system updates and approved application updates on university‑owned Macs. This article explains how updates are deployed, what prompts you may see, and what actions you can take when an update is required.

Apple does not release macOS updates on a fixed schedule. When updates become available, UTulsa IT reviews and tests them before approving deployment to campus devices. Updates may include macOS system updates, Mac App Store applications, or managed applications provided through Jamf.

Step-by-Step: Installing a Required macOS Update

  1. When an approved update is available, you will see a macOS notification indicating that a required managed update is ready.
  2. Select Install to begin the update immediately, or choose the available option to defer the installation if provided.
  3. To review update details manually, open System Settings and navigate to General > Software Update.
  4. When prompted, enter your current macOS user password. In most cases, administrator credentials are not required, though some updates may request additional authorization.
  5. Follow the on‑screen prompts to complete the installation. A restart is typically required to finish applying macOS updates.

💡 Tip: Saving your work before installing updates helps prevent data loss, especially when a restart is required.

Important: If an update is deferred multiple times, Jamf may automatically enforce installation once the allowed deferrals are exhausted.

How Updates Are Deployed

Updates are deployed in phases to reduce risk and minimize disruption:

  • Tier 1 – Test / Pilot Group: IT-managed Macs and volunteer test devices receive updates first for evaluation.
  • Tier 2 – Individual Macs: Employee and office Macs receive updates after successful testing.
  • Tier 3 – Shared Macs: Classroom, lab, and conference room Macs are typically updated automatically after hours and may restart without user confirmation.

The exact timing, number of deferrals, and prompt frequency are determined by IT policy and may vary by update type.
