How to set up your university-issued iPhone hotspot
After taking the iphone out of the box and removing the wrapping, press the sleep/wake button on the upper right-hand side.
The “hello” screen will appear and prompt you to press the “home” button which is the circle at the bottom of the front side of the phone.

- Then, you will be prompted to select a language. Select the language you prefer.
- Next, you will be asked to identify your region. Select United States.
- Next, it will give you the option of quickly setting up the new iphone via the Quick Start page. Since this iphone is only to be used as a hotspot – it is NOT on a plan that allows it to be used as a phone, the instructions that follow will use the manual set-up process. To begin the manual setup, touch “Set Up Manually” at the bottom of the screen.
The first thing it will ask you to do is choose a Wi-Fi network. Please DO NOT connect it to any Wi-Fi network at this stage since you are going to use the phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Instead, select “Next” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
Then, you will be shown Apple’s Data and Privacy policy. After reading this thoroughly, select “Continue” at the bottom of the screen.
The next few screens provide security to ensure that only you can use the iPhone. These involve setting up Touch ID. Follow the instructions to set up Touch ID. If you choose not to do this, follow those instructions.
The second security option requires creating a passcode. Follow the instructions to set-up a passcode. We cannot retrieve this, so take steps to note it in case you forget it. If you choose to skip this step, enter “Don’t Use Passcode.” You can set-up later, if you choose to use this functionality.
You will then be given the chance to transfer apps and data from another device, DO NOT DO THIS! Again this device is to be used solely as a hotspot. The plan does not allow it to be used for other purposes. Select “Don’t Transfer Apps & Data,” at the bottom of the screen.
You will be asked to sign in with your Apple ID. DO NOT DO THIS. Select “Forgot password or don’t have an Apple ID?” option in the center of the screen. Then, select “Set Up Later in Settings,” in the center of the screen.
You will then be asked to confirm your decision to opt-out of setting up an Apple ID at this time. To do this, select, “Don’t Use.”
Next, you will be asked to examine the terms and conditions of using the Apple operating system. Please read these thoroughly, and then select, “Agree,” in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.

- Next, you will be asked to choose some settings, to simplify this process, please select, “Continue.”
- The next screen informs you that you will be notified when there are updates available for your phone. To move past this screen, please select, “Continue.”
- Then, you will be given the option to connect your phone to iMessage and FaceTime. Please select, “Not Now,” at the bottom of the screen.
- Next, you will be given the option to get started using Siri. To simplify this current setup process, select, “Set Up Later in Settings,” at the bottom of the screen.
- After Siri, you will be asked to set up a feature that controls the screen time on the phone. To simplify this current setup process, select, “Set Up Later in Settings,” and skip this step.
- The next screen asks you whether you would like to share app data with app developers. We recommend that you select, “Don’t Share,” at the bottom of the screen. The next step will proceed as if, “Don’t Share,” was selected.
- Next, you will be asked whether you want the appearance of the iphone screen to be “Light” or “Dark.” Please select which appearance you prefer using the check mark, and then press, “Continue,” at the bottom of the screen.
The next screen asks you to choose how the phone vibrates your finger when you touch the “home” button. There are three options. Pick one, then press, “Continue.” Please note, on this screen, “Continue,” is in the upper right-hand corner rather than at the bottom.
The next screen asks you whether you want the iPhone display to be zoomed in or not. The standard display is on the left, and the zoomed-in display is on the right. Please pick one using the checkmark. The checkmarks will appear under the options when you slide the screen up. Press, “Continue,” after you’ve made your choice.

- Then, you will see a screen welcoming you to the iPhone. Press “Get Started” at the bottom of this screen.
- You should see the home screen of the iPhone. If you don’t, press the “home” (circle) button just below the screen. From this screen, select, “Settings,” in the lower right-hand corner of the first set of apps.
The Settings menu will appear. From this menu, click, “Personal Hotspot,” near the center of the screen.
On the Personal Hotspot screen, switch the, “Allow Others to Join,” toggle button to green by sliding it to the right. Note that the Wi-Fi password you will use to connect to the iPhone's network is displayed below the now-green toggle button. At this point, the iPhone is functioning as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.
Place the iPhone next to the device that you’re using and connect it to (i.e, laptop, tablet, or desktop). The next steps will sync the two devices. You do this by opening the list of available Wi-Fi networks on your device. In the images below, you will see what this looks like on a PC. The process will be similar on other computers, but will look slightly different. On a PC, you can open the network list by clicking on the network icon in the lower right-hand corner of the computer screen.
From the list, identify the network that is coming from the iPhone hotspot. It will be named, “iPhone.” Click connect.
After you click, “Connect,” you will be prompted to enter the password. The password you will use is the one from the Personal Hotspot screen on the iPhone.
After you enter the password, you will be connected to the iPhone's hotspot Wi-Fi network.

As this is a university-issued hot spot, disconnect your device from the hotspot network when you aren’t using it for coursework. While the possible data you may use is “unlimited,” the bandwidth at which you receive this data is significantly reduced if you use above a certain amount. The university monitors this use and can inform you when your connection is slow because you have used too much.

- To disconnect from the iPhone hotspot network, open your network connections list by clicking again on the network icon in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Then click, “Disconnect.” This disconnects your device from the iPhone’s hotspot network.

- On the iphone, return to the Personal Hotspot screen. If you’ve exited Settings, select, “Settings,” and then, “Personal Hotspot,” to arrive at the Personal Hotspot screen. See steps 24 and 25 above if you have questions about how to find these. On this screen, move the green toggle-button to the left. This will turn off the hotspot feature of the iphone. With the toggle moved to the left, the button should no longer be green and will be gray instead. This confirms that you the hotspot feature is off.
- To save data, you will need to repeat the steps of turning on the iphone personal hotspot and connecting your device to the iphone hotspot network when you start coursework, then turn off and disconnect once you finish your coursework (steps 31 and 32).
